The Movimiento 26 de Marzo (March 26th Movement) defines itself as Marxist-Leninist. It was originally founded as the political party wing of the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional - Tupamaros. Originally its name was Movimiento de Independientes 26 de Marzo (M26) (March 26th Independent Movement).
It takes its name (March 26th) from the date when the Frente Amplio made its first big political meeting in Montevideo on March 26th, 1971. On the elections of 1971 the group did not present candidates, but supported candidates of the Frente Amplio in general.
After the 1973 coup the movement acted in an "underground" way and in foreign countries. In this time the name of the group was changed to its present name: Movimiento 26 de Marzo (March 26th Movement).
After the return of the civil government in 1985, the movement appeared again. The first time the group presented ballots to elections was in 1989.
The most important leader of this group is Raúl Sendic, the son (with the same name) of the founder of Tupamaros. The group is a member of the coalition Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría

The flag of the Movimiento 26 de Marzo (March 26th Movement) is yellow with a five points red star in the center that has the inscription "26 M" in black letters that stands for the name of the group. This name is repeated inside a blue arc below the star. There it appears the complete text "26 de Marzo" (March 26th) in white letters.
In the website of the group, they define this red star as "la roja estrella del internacionalismo proletario" (the red star of proletarian internationalism). This red star is commonly used by Marxist and communist parties and groups around the world.
During a Frente Amplio political meeting on 27th October 2004 (just before the presidential elections of 2004), a flag of the Movimiento 26 de Marzo was present between Frente Amplio flags.

The Movimiento 26 de Marzo also uses a yellow flag with the number of its list ballot: "326". This writing appear in a "tricolor way" with the color design of the Frente Amplio flag of Otorgués. Below the number a small Frente Amplio flag with logo and a Movimiento 26 de Marzo red star appear. There are variants of this flag.

Sometimes , the Movimiento 26 de Marzo also uses a Frente Amplio flag of Otorgués with the "26 M" red star added. The red star appear "fimbriated" in yellow, and the letters appear "fimbriated" in white. A picture of this flag variant in a political meeting made on March 2004 is available at the March 26th Movement radio program website.
This flag looks something similar to a flag of Serbia or Montenegro under Socialist Yugoslavia. However this does not happen on purpose. It is just a coincidence. In the original and plain flag of Otorgues (1815) these colors were the colors of Federalism in the Plata River. This flag was later adopted by the Frente Amplio in 1971.

(This flag) is a combination of both the group red star with the
Otorgues flag used by the Frente Amplio since 1971.

In the website of the Movimiento 26 de Marzo radio program another flag appear. It has two horizontal stripes red and light blue, and the "26 M" red star at center. The flag has a white border, but this could be just because of the manufacture.
